In order to make this test unique, we chose the longest East to West line across South Africa as our test-route for the epic journey.

To add a further dimension, we drove one X-Trail 2.0 dCi from the Eastern starting point (Richard’s Bay – driven by a “novice team”), and a second X-Trail 2.0 dCi from the Western starting point (Alexander Bay – driven by a “professional team”), both meeting in the middle of the country - a small town called Boshof, between Bloemfontein and Kimberly.

Finally, by covering the 2000km journey at an average consumption rate of 4,75l/100km, we have proven that economy figures of 21km/litre of fuel are possible. This not only reaches our target of 1000km on a single tank of fuel – but also exceeds that mark by over 350km!!!

The professional team travelled 1 053km in 11hrs 34min, at an average speed of 93km/h. They used 48.9litres during the journey and would have been able to travel an additional 345km before running out of diesel. They returned a fuel consumption figure of just 4.6l/100km.
